Hi friends, I was chatting to someone a few days ago, and he was trying to explain to me how it’s our greatest responsibility to serve God.
All too often ‘service to God’ is the battle cry heard in way too many churches. Unfortunately this is a residue left over from primitive pagan religions, who spent their entire life trying to appease some angry god. And as a result, way too much emphasis is placed on service to God, even in modern day Christianity. Many consider that if they don’t live up to the demands that they imagine God places on them, they will be punished in some way.
Some serve through fear, others motivated by a feeling of responsibility. The real error with this kind of thinking is that God needs something from you or me.
When the Apostle Paul addressed the pagans on Mars Hill, he made it abundantly clear that God needs nothing from us: “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else”(Acts 17:24-25).
God is a giver. He is totally self sufficient and doesn’t need man to do anything for him. Yes, that’s the bad news. The good news is that he wants you, not as a maid, but as his beloved Bride!
Of course we should serve God, but that service should flow out of the love we have for him, not out of fear or a feeling of obligation. His love for us motivates us to love him back thru joyful acts of service. When we fully comprehend his love, we will discover a passion to serve him and the burden will be lifted.
Through the pages of Face to Face Magazine, it is our hope to open your eyes to the Almighty God, who needs nothing from us, but whose greatest desire is for us to have a personal and intimate relationship with him, and serve him with joy in our hearts!
