Volume 6 No 4

It’s 4am and I’m lying in a small tent on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, listening to Africa slowly awakening. Not far away a hippo starts grunting and splashing, claiming his rights to his territory. A hyena whoops to his pack, announcing perhaps the discovery of some delicious morsel. The local cockerels start competing against one another to see who can crow loudest. In the campsite next to me a security guard’s walkie-talkie crackles, then a voice requests that a gate be opened to allow an early riser to leave. I lie and wonder at the incredible variety of sounds, each with its own meaning and purpose.

Clear and precise communication is essential to convey vital information. I have this editorial to write and deadline to meet, hence my typing this message out to you using one thumb on a phone keypad. It gets me thinking about the most vital message ever conveyed, not motivated by necessity but purely by love.

Adam had sinned and mankind had been living fallen lives for thousands of years. It was time. God wanted us to know of his love for us, even in our broken state. He didn’t send a message through a prophet as he had in times past. He didn’t paint it on the clouds using bold strokes of golden pink sunlight, though he could have. He decided to deliver it personally, although the cost was immeasurable. Casting aside the grandeur of heaven, God took on the form of a man, came down to our level so we could relate to him, and through both word and action declared his incredible love to us; that he loved us unconditionally even in our brokenness, and wanted an intimate relationship with each one of us.

And it is this message of love and hope that Face to Face continues to proclaim.

I don’t know where you will read this magazine or what state of mind you will be in. Perhaps you will be rejoicing over some blessing or in deep despair trying to cope with the many hardships that life throws our way. Of one thing be assured; God has already proved that he loves you more than you can even start to comprehend (John 3:16). For this is how God loved the world; he gave his unique Son so that everyone who believes in him might not be lost but have eternal life (ISV).
